Christmas market analysis: Here are the most in Germany

Advent is approaching and the Christmas market season is beginning in many cities. The selection in Berlin is particularly large: with a total of 78 markets, the capital offers by far the most diverse range this year. This is shown by our latest analysis, which compares the number and density of Christmas markets in major German cities. All official markets in the respective cities and their distribution across the city area were recorded for this purpose.

Berlin captivates with its incredible diversity

Our capital city Berlin is the frontrunner. A total of 78 Christmas markets can be visited this year. There is no shortage of cultural diversity in the districts: from the English Christmas market in Charlottenburg to the Japanese market in Kreuzberg and the Swedish Christmas bazaar in Wilmersdorf. Cologne follows in second place with 46 markets, Hamburg in third with 33. Both cities also offer more than just the well-known crowd pullers around Cologne Cathedral and Hamburg City Hall.

The cities of Bochum and Mannheim offer fewer markets, with four each, placing them at the bottom of the ranking. Bonn is just ahead of them with five markets. Dresden offers a total of ten Christmas markets, placing it in the lower midfield.

Nuremberg has the highest density of Christmas markets.

For the analysis, the density of Christmas markets per 50 square kilometers was also calculated. Nuremberg comes out on top here: with 7.2 Christmas markets per 50 square kilometers, the Bavarian city is the frontrunner. A total of 27 markets invite visitors to the city this year, including the famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt. Cologne also ranks second in terms of density, with 5.7 markets per 50 square kilometers. Hanover follows closely behind with 5.6 markets.

Bochum and Mannheim are once again at the bottom of the list: both cities have 1.4 Christmas markets per 50 square kilometers. Dresden is just above that with 1.5, while Bremen is also in the lower range with 1.7.

“Busy Christmas markets mean busy city centers—and therefore a significant opportunity for local retailers. Our data shows where there is particularly high footfall,” explains Matthias Lange, CEO of Localyzer. “Localyzer helps retailers convert this additional footfall into actual customers by making their offerings visible online exactly where the search begins.”
About the study

Localyzer examined the number of Christmas markets in Germany's 20 largest cities. The official websites of the cities were consulted and the density of Christmas markets was calculated based on the city area. To do this, the number of Christmas markets per 50 square kilometers was calculated.
